Following the outbreak of the coronavirus disease and the need to take precautionary measures, chairman of Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Joshua Laven Ubandoma, has commenced the fumigation of nooks and crannies of the council area.
Among the places to be fumigated are churches, markets, banks ATM points, military zones, the council secretariats and streets.
The exercise also includes distribution of sanitisers, face masks, hand gloves, among other materials.
The state Agricultural Service Training Centres (ASTC) and the state fire service were engaged in the fumigation exercise.
Speaking at the flag off ceremony of the two-week long exercise, the Chairman said if precautionary measures were not taken and the dreaded disease got into the rural communities, a lot of damage would be done and many lives will be lost.
He directed that all vehicles coming into Langtang be fumigated and the occupants tested and anyone with temperature above 39 degree should be quarantined for 14 days.
The Chairman appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that palliatives are put in place by the federal government to cushion the effects of the lockdown on the local communities.
“I feel a sense of responsiveness to start this fumigation exercise. If we don’t take preventive measures, what is happening in the world will consume us. The best we can do is to prevent it.
“It has not affected us yet but we have to prevent it so that our people will be free from the virus. We are fumigating churches, mosques, markets, streets, military zones and all public places that people gather now that we have two deaths and more than 100 cases.
“I encourage everybody to take personal hygiene very seriously more so that we have poor health system in the local government area.”
In his remarks, the Marketing Manager of ASTC, Gorge Dapl, said the chemical used for the fumigation was harmless.
