The Kebbi State Government has disclosed that the state has two ventilators.
The Commissioner of Health, Hon. Jafar Mohammed, noted this on Wednesday, while conducting Journalists round the Intensive Care Unit of Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, where the ventilators are located.
Daily Trust had exclusively reported that as the number of confirmed cases from the deadly COVID-19 pandemic increase in the country, there are only 169 ventilators in sixteen out of the 36 states.
In the report, the Kebbi state Commissioner for Health, Mohammed Jafar, said he could not give the figure of the ventilators available in the state at present, saying the state government had placed order for new ones. He said he would only give the number of the ventilators after the new ones had all been installed.
The commissioner in a statement by Yahaya Sarki, the SA Media to Kebbi state governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, on Wednesday, said the briefing became necessary following the report by Daily Trust.
” I can also confidently intimate the residents of the state that we have two functional ventilators. As you can see tangibly in our ICU of the Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi,” he said
The Commissioner for Health who is also the Chairman, Task Force on Covid- 19 in the state, explained that, even before the advent of the coronavirus pandemic, the two ventilators were installed by the government at the ICU of the hospital and they were fully functional.
The Permanent Secretary and Chief Medical Director of Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Dr. Aminu Haliru Bunza, also described the ventilators as high capacity, with all the necessary accessories, including syringe pump and Ultra-sound .
The Visiting Consultant to the Hospital , Dr. Yakubu Sani Momoh, said the ventilators were capable of servicing patients of Covid -19, should the need arises.
