The Plateau state Police Command has grilled the chairman, Ulamas Council of Izalatil Bid’a Wa’ikamatis Sunnah, Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, for failing to adhere to government’s directives on religious gatherings earlier announced to curb the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

Police spokesperson in the state, ASP Ubah Gabriel, told journalists on Tuesday evening that Sheikh Jingir was invited by the Command because he (Jingir) and thousands of his followers held the weekly Juma’at prayers against the government’s order.

According to ASP Gabriel, the state Commissioner of Police, Isaac Akinmoyede, told Sheikh Jingir that the command won’t tolerate such behaviour again in the state.

ASP Gabriel, however, said that the leader of the group in his response to the commissioner promised to strictly abide by the government’s directives to curb the spread of the disease.

“The Sheikh promised that he will adhere to the instructions of the federal administration. He has accepted to go by the rules and directives of the state and federal governments,” he said.

It will be recalled that the JIBWIS’s leader, had in a statement signed by the National Chairman, (Administration) of the group, Sheikh AbdulMuhiyi, on Monday declared his total compliance with the safety measures announced by both federal and state governments against the virus.
