Nigeria’s football body shuts down football activities, including street football

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has announced the cessation of all forms of football activities in the country for the next four weeks, as a result of the global coronavirus pandemic.

NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja Wednesday night.

According to the country’s football –governing body, the shutdown affects all on-field activities of the various National Teams, the Nigeria Professional Football League, the other Leagues, youth football programmes and even street football.

President of the NFF, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick said the cessation will be for four weeks after which the situation will be reviewed in line with events and trends worldwide, according to the statement.

He also advised all members of the football family to observe the various safety precautions and conduct as advised by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, such as hand-washing, the use of sanitizers and social distancing.

Pinnick also stated that the only football activity that will be permitted is the work of the NFF investigation committee into the death of Chineme Martins, which was inaugurated yesterday in Benin City and will submit its report within the next 10 days.

 

About coronavirus in Nigeria

The Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) confirmed five new cases of the coronavirus in Nigeria earlier today.
This is bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria to eight.
The minister of health, Dr. E. Osagie Ehanire, in a statement Wednesday morning, revealed that three from the new cases arrived from the United States, while two came in from the United Kingdom.
All sports affected
Nigeria had suspended all national and international competitions including qualifying tournaments for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games following the outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19) across the globe.
The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development announced this in a circular signed by the Director, Federation of Elite Athletes Department (FEAD), Mrs Tayo Oreweme which was addressed to all National Sports Federations.
