Vice Chancellor of Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, Professor Fatima Batul Mukhtar has said that Zandam Abubakar Yakubu of the Department of Computer Science who scored 4.96 on a class of 5 in his 4-year degree programme has been adjudged the best graduating student.
Professor Mukhtar who said the top student was from Jigawa State, made the disclosure at the 5th convocation ceremony of the university.
“I am sure our host governor, Badaru Abubakar, would be fascinated by this news. He was similarly fascinated when some few weeks ago at an ABU graduation ceremony, a student from Jigawa emerged overall best in the Department of Arabic and overall best in the entire ABU,” she said.
It would be recalled that a total of 786 undergraduates have graduated from the university out of which 52 made first class honours.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari, who was represented by the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, Professor Adamu Abubakar Rasheed, has commended the FUD for its achievements thus far.
“On behalf of the federal government and the entire citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I sincerely congratulate the chancellor, the pro-chancellor and the council, the vice chancellor and the senate, the staff and students of this young but vibrant academic institution for their exemplary leadership.
I must admit that my government is genuinely impressed with the ability of the university to maintain sustainable peace, stability and enviable academic growth since inception in 2012. I am profoundly impressed by the demonstration of excellence in the general conduct of the affairs of this university,” he said.
The president said he was impressed that the university’s new leadership had succeeded in the last five years in sustaining the tempo of rapid development “which was a manifestation of incredible dedication to the academia on the part staff and students of the university, particularly the Vice Chancellor, Professor Fatima Mukhtar, who has proven beyond reasonable doubt, the capability of Nigerian woman for competitiveness and competence in all walks of national life.”
He said as one of the few female VCs in the country, Prof Mukhtar has shown some remarkable skills in the management of the complex institution by propelling its transformation into an accomplished citadel of learning in a very short period.
