Community seeks more interventions as FG commissions erosion control projects

The Residents of Dutse Sagwari Layout community; and officials of Public Service Institute in Bwari Area Council of Abuja, have sought more interventions from the Federal Government on erosion control in the areas.

They made the demand at the official commissioning and hand over event of gully erosion and road rehabilitation projects to the communities carried out by Ecological Fund Office (EFO) through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The Vice Chairman of Dutse Sagwari layout, Engr Ben Ginikanwa, said before the award of the project, the community had been grappling with issue of flooding since its creation.

He, however, expressed happiness at the completion of the project and appealed to the government to consider two major areas where they are experiencing gully erosion which were not captured in the first phase, saying failure to do so may also affect the project which has been carried out.

The Minister of FCT, Mohammed Bello, who represented President Mohammadu Buhari, promised that something will be done to ensure that other areas are captured and that in areas where the FCT can assist, he will send officers to survey the areas and advise accordingly on the projects to carry out, such as tree planting in the institute.

While noting that the projects were approved by the president for the first quarter of 2018 ecological intervention and was fully completed in July 2019, he said the project in the institute was expected to address the devastating effects of flood and erosion within the public institute and its environs, as well as reduce danger to lives and properties.

He underscored the importance of the present administration’s determination to continue with the implementation of all “genuine government policies across the country.”

He implored the management of the Garden to cherish, maintain and ensure sustainability of the project.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of EFO, Dr Habiba Lawal, said the project was initiated following requests for urgent intervention forwarded to EFO by the community on need to arrest the erosion menace, and to avoid further environmental degradation.

She said the resources which the federal government have committed must not be wasted.
