Film and music video directing are two different ball games and not all directors combine them. Weekend Magazine takes a look at some Nigerian directors who do both.
Akin Alabi
Akin Alabi who is a prominent cinematographer has worked with celebrities like 9ice, Timaya, Tope Alabi, Onyeka Onwenu, Reminisce, Tim Godfrey, Ayan Jesu, Paul Ik Dairo and many others. He has directed music videos like ‘Komole’ by TIV ft Vector, ‘Gbamugbamu’ and ‘No be Mistake’ by 9ice, ‘Yankuliya’, ‘God I beg’, ‘If to Say’ by Timaya; ‘Promise Land by Paul Play, ‘Crazy’ by Julius Agwu, ‘Ariya’ by Ayuba, ‘Bu nwanem’ by Onyeka Onwenu and ‘Kabakaba’ by Konga, to mention a few. He is the filmmaker of the animation TV series on Nigerian proverbs called My Nigerian Proverb on African Magic, TrybeTV, YangaTV (UK) and on BRT Buses in Lagos.
Kemi Adetiba
The 30-year-old filmmaker is the daughter of Dele Adetiba, a veteran in advertising and broadcast industry. She started out as a radio presenter with Rhythm FM. She has since delved into filmmaking and has made quite a name for herself in the industry. She is the director of the cinema worthy movies, ‘King of Boys’ and ‘The Wedding Party’. She has also directed a lot of musical videos. Kemi Adetiba has directed music videos like ‘Darling’ by Tiwa Savage, ‘Anifowose’ by Olamide, ‘Lagos Party’ by Banky W, ‘Toh Bad’ by Niyola and ‘Onye’ by Waje to mention a few.
Tchidi Chikere
He started his career in the University where he began writing movie scripts. He has directed and produced movies like ‘Blood Sisters’, ‘Stronger than Pain’, ‘Gold Not Silver’, ‘Paint My Life’, ‘Dumebi’ and ‘Pink Room’ (a talk show). He has also directed music videos like Kcee’s ‘Agbomma’, and a music album named ‘Slaps and Kisses’ which was produced by the late OJB Jezreel.
Zina Saro-Wiwa
The filmmaker is the daughter of late Ken Saro-Wiwa, the poet, author and human rights activist. She has directed Nigerian films like ‘Phylis’, ‘For Mourning Class’ and ‘The Deliverance of Comfort’. She has also directed ‘Dindi’, a music video by Alissa Sanders.
Andrew Dosunmu
The Nigerian photographer and filmmaker is not only known in Nigeria for his work, he has also gained prominence in America. He has directed music videos for the likes of Isaac Hayes, Wyclef Jean, Aaron Neville and Angie Stone to mention a few. He has directed movies like ‘Hot Irons’, ‘Restless City’ and ‘The African Game’ to mention a few.
