Court dissolves 4-year-old marriage over alleged beating

A Customary court sitting at Ake, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has dissolved the four-year-old marriage between Mr Ibrahim Idowu and his wife, Habibat, over an allegation, by the wife, of physical assault.

Habibat had dragged Idowu before the court seeking an end to the marriage, which produced a four-year- old girl, Aliyat.

The petitioner told the court that there was no love in their matrimonial home as her husband was always beating her. She said parents of both families had intervened in the matter many times, but the husband did not change for good.

Habibat told the court on Monday that shortly after both parties left the court after the last sitting, her husband rushed home and destroyed her property.

“Your Honour, he has refused to show up in court because of what he did the last time. Immediately, he returned home, he destroyed some of my property and hid others. And I have been looking for him but could not find him. In fact, I have informed the police to arrest him once he appears in court today (Monday). Please, separate us,” she said.

The petitioner told the court that Idowu did not pay any dowry to her parents and there was actually no proper engagement between them.

She demanded custody of the child and prayed the court to order the respondent to shoulder the responsibility of feeding and educating their daughter.

The court president, Mrs A. O. Abimbola, ended the relationship and ordered Idowu to be paying N10,000 monthly for the feeding of the girl, in addition to taking care of her education.
