‘Allow my wife to go, she’s devil incarnate’

A middle-aged man, Mr Mumuni Akanni, has asked a Customary court sitting at Ake, Abeokuta, Ogun State, to grant the prayer of his wife, Kemi, who was seeking the dissolution of their 25-year-old marriage.

Akanni, who appeared in court on Monday, described Kemi as “a devil incarnate hell-bent on quitting the marriage after I have blown the lid off her evil acts.”

The respondent declared, “If you see her, she appears like an SU, but she is not. She used the church as a cover-up to commit adultery. I can count those she had affairs with. My wife knows I have uncovered all these dirty acts and that’s why she wants to end the marriage. I am not against the divorce move, she is free to go.”

Akanni, however, demanded to hold a meeting with the six children the marriage produced, saying his wife had kept them away from him.

Kemi had dragged her husband to court for divorce citing provocation, frequent fighting, lack of care and threats to her life as reasons for filing the suit.

She told the court that her life was under threat as “a result of ceaseless beating.”

She wondered why her husband would accuse her of adultery after giving him six children.

“Your Honour, my life is important to me. I am no longer interested in the marriage. He beats me mercilessly and has turned me into a partial handicapped,” she pleaded.

She did not oppose her husband’s demand to meet the children.

The president of the court, Mrs A. O. Abimbola, ordered the couple to come along with three of the children – Afeez, Memunat and Baseerat – to court at the next adjourned date.

The court adjourned sitting on the matter till March 11, 2020 for continuation of hearing.
