Would you prefer marriage before completing your education?

Higher institutions are not meant for single individuals only. We have people who are already married in schools studying to further their education. Now, the question is: Is everyone open to the idea of getting married while in school? Lifextra takes a look.

Life, as we know it, is a mystery. There is no definitive way to live life, although some people set the rules by saying one should go to school, get a job, get married, and get pregnant before finally having children. But, the truth is it does not always happen in that order.

Some have children before getting married; some get married before finishing their education while some secure a job way after getting married and having children. So, would you rather complete your education before getting married or not?

Deola Oni, a student in Abuja, told LifeXtra that she would like to complete her education before getting married because many things could come up in marriage that might force her to stop her education with the hopes of completing it at a later date. “I will not get married until I finish my education. Now, I am in 300 Level and if any man wants to marry me, he has to wait because it is this same man that will tell me to stop going to school if I get pregnant. I don’t want anything that will impede my success,” she said.

She also told LifeXtra that although there is nothing wrong in marrying before completing one’s education, but she can’t do it.

A married woman who was also interviewed said she had regrets stopping her education to get married.

Chisom Eze, who resides in Lagos, is a married woman with two kids and she told LifeXtra that she had to stop going to school (higher institution) because she got pregnant unexpectedly soon after getting married. “I could not juggle school, being a wife and a mother together. It was really stressful so I had to stop school for a while. What people don’t know is that going back to school is hard; the responsibilities of family and survival make it really hard unless someone is determined or has extra help from maybe family members,” she said.

Godswill Obinna, who resides in Lagos, doesn’t see anything wrong in getting married before one finishes school. “I don’t see any big deal in getting married before finishing one’s education. That will even help them plan better as a family and I like the joy that comes with starting your life early with your partner. There is nothing wrong with it at all.”

Jos-based Abigail Nwachukwu told LifeXtra that she doesn’t mind getting married before finishing her education. Abigail Nwachukwu said, “I don’t mind getting married before finishing school. In fact, I am in school now and if I get someone serious now, I will go ahead and get married. I think that is even the best because that way you have a new support system, someone who will support you emotionally, physically and even financially. I will, however, wait till after school before I get pregnant because I don’t think I can continue school if I get pregnant. The stress will become too much.”

A Kano resident, Tofunmi Gabriel, says he would rather finish his education before getting married. “Marriage is an institution of its own and it can be very demanding. I would prefer to finish school before getting married because when I get married, my priority would be to earn as much money as I can to sustain my family and make my wife happy. They say ‘love is sweet but when money enters love is sweeter’, and I don’t think I can be in school and concentrate on making money, no. So, that is my take on this.”
