Sowore: Social media attack on DSS compromises security, warns group

A civil-society group, Global Peace and Sustainability Network, has called for restraint to attacks on the Department of State Services in the wake of imbroglio with Omoyele Sowore, convener of #RevolutionNow.

GPSN said continued attacks on the DSS on social media would expose Nigeria’s territorial integrity to compromise.

“With the advent of social media, the territorial integrity of our country and other countries is threatened by fake news. People have become merchants of fake news through the social media,” executive director of the group Longers Anyawu said in an interview made available to Daily Trust.

“Of course, you know the lies, mysteries and make-up stories that have surrounded the Sowore’s issue with the DSS. It is targeted at destroying our security architecture. Countries all over the world respect the sanctity of their security apparatus.

“With due respect, record has shown clearly how the protagonist of this imbroglio, that is Sowore has used his online medium to bring down so many organizations. Some prosperous Nigerians today have been blackmailed into extinction. Some establishments have been hacked down because of high volume of lies and fake news perpetrated through unregulated online means.”

He urged circumspection of unfounded news and rumours, and called on the media to help ensure the political tension being created by the “assault on the judiciary and DSS” is condemned.

“The drama that is surrounding the latest story between the DSS and l Sowore is shrouded in mystery. It will be an act of unpatriotism for anybody to jump to conclusion in the matter. We don’t know which one is the truth. There are several versions of what is happening. Now the DSS has released information showing that there is international sabotage to the entire thing. You don’t put the territorial integrity of your country into danger in the guise of activism,” Anyanwu emphasized.
