The Department of Petroleum Resources, Benin Field Office, has sealed four filling stations and three Liquefied Petroleum Gas plants in Benin, Edo State.
The Operations Controller of DPR Benin, Maynard Oriaifo, said during the sensitization and routine surveillance of filling stations and gas plants in the Benin, aimed at curbing gas explosion in the state.
“We are worried that as Christmas is drawing nearer, more people will have the need to use gas for domestic purposes and even PMS probably to power their generators, so we decided to sensitize them to be more cautious in handling these explosive materials so as to save more lives,” he said.
Oriafo said the DPR was after illegal gas plants that did not have permit and also those who had permit but had no licence.
“We also check their state of preparedness in case of fire incident. Fire hydrants and fire extinguishers are tested by competent contractors. We also used the opportunity to sensitise them on gas safety, measures and safe practices in handling gas plant.
According to him, all gas plant need to have a copy of standard operating procedure while their operators must be tutored on the safety and put it into practice.
He said the DPR also visited some filling stations to check their dispensing pumps, saying that” those that were not adequately dispensing were sealed and paid the appropriate penalty.
