The Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (KAD-SIECOM) has sought for feedbacks from the Local Government Councils in the State on the introduction of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) during the local government elections held May last year.
Dr Saratu Dikko-Audu, Chairman of KAD-SIECOM, spoke during a one day workshop on Electoral Legal and Regulatory Framework for Local Government Councils in Kaduna State held in Kafanchan, Jema’a local government area.
Dr Dikko-Audu said the workshop, which was the first of its kind, was aimed at acquainting the stakeholders with rules guiding electoral practices so that the populace would enjoy the dividends of democracy.
She said it was also imperative to seek feedback and reactions following the introduction of the EVM during the local government elections across the State to enable the commission improve upon its usage in subsequent exercises.
“Being the first time of introducing electronic voting in our Local Government Elections, we want to have your reaction to this innovation and also to get your views on how to improve election administration in Kaduna State.
“The report produced as a result of this workshop will greatly enhance the quality of KAD-SIECOM service delivery,” Dikko-Audu said.
She said the participants would have acquired the requisite general knowledge of the elements of electoral framework to enable them deliver the dividends of democracy to their constituencies.
Prof. Alex Kure, Provost, Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, who was Chairman of the occasion, commended SIECOM for taking the discussion of electoral matters to the grassroots.
“The event would provide participants the avenue to get expert responses to concerns that would be raised by the participants,” said Prof. Kure, who expressed optimism that Kaduna State Electoral process would be fortified ahead of subsequent elections.
Also speaking, Justice Muhammadu Bello, the Chief Judge of Kaduna State, who was represented by Mr Murtala Mu’azu, in a keynote address, commended the organisers, saying the event would avail participants opportunity to discuss and make recommendations on the use of the EVM.
Participants at the workshop included personnel from the Nigeria Police, civil defense, immigration, NOA, as well as traditional and religious leaders amongst others.
