The Ekiti State Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr Solomon Iyamu, has confirmed the arrest of two herders and about 100 cows he alleged were destroying farms.
Iyamu said the arrest was made possible through a joint operation by the Agro Rangers Unit of the command, the Nigeria Army, Police, Ekiti State Anti-Grazing Agency and men of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (GVN).
According to the NSCDC boss, the operation took place in the Ago Aduloju and Ogbese axes of Ise-Orun and Gbonyin local government areas of the state and lasted for about six hours.
He said the herders would be charged to court as soon as investigation was completed on the matter, while the cows were being held at the premises of the command in Ado-Ekiti.
Iyamu explained there had been series of complaints from farmers, especially of herders migrating from neighbouring states to Ekiti in search of fresh pasture for their animals.
According to him, “the herders were found uprooting tubers to feed their animals along the Ado/Ijan road, and also destroying barns and other valuables on farms.
Iyamu appealed to farmers in Ekiti State not to take laws into their hands, and to always report any perceived herder’s threat to men of the Agro Rangers Unit of the Corps for prompt assistance.
