Burna Boy, Hamzat Lawal, Timini Egbuson, others win 2019 Future Awards

The 2019 Grammy award nominee and Nigerian Afrobeats star, Damini Ogulu (a.k.a. Burna Boy), alongside the Founder/CEO of Connected Development (CODE), Hamzat Lawal and Nollywood sensation, Timini Egbuson, were among a new generation of innovators, creatives and achievers who received the 2019 Future Awards held in Lagos.

Burna Boy won the highly coveted ‘Young Person of the Year’ award and The Future Award Prize for Music; just as Hamzat Lawal went home with the Future Award Prize for Advocacy while Timini Egbuson got The Future Awards Prize for Acting, etc.

The event, hosted by talented Nigerian musician, Folarin Falana (a.k.a. ‘Falz’); Nollywood actor, Toni Tones; media personality, Taymesan Emmanuel and a former BBNaija ‘Pepper Dem’ housemate, Khaffy Kareem, attracted top African government officials including Nigeria’s transport minister, Rotimi Amaechi, and Botswana’s Minister of Trade and Investment, Bogolo Kenewendo.

Other dignataries at the event include a former governor of Ogun State, Segun Osoba; the Special Adviser to the President on Ease of Doing Business, Jumoke Adenowo; Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Debo Ogundoyin; the Managing Director of Transcorp Hotels, Owen Omogiafo; and leading Nollywood celebrities such as Toyin Abraham and Shaffy Bello, among others.

Themed ‘Nigeria’s New Tribe’, the 14th edition of the awards had 21 winners selected from various categories such as Acting, Music, Public Service, Advocacy, and Agriculture etc, out of the over 100 nominees received.

According to the organisers, this year’s Future Awards aimed at fostering talent, excellence and service among young Nigerians and to “celebrate a new generation of young, innovative achievers between ages 18 – 31 years, who are driving the narrative and leading the change in their industries, either in the country or globally.”
