The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State has finally moved to its permanent orientation camp in Umuawulu/Mbaukwu, Awka South, after 28 years of using a secondary school.
The permanent orientation camp was inaugurated during the swearing ceremony of the 2019 Batch C stream corps members deployed to the state.
The NYSC was occupying an Anglican Church’s property, Progressive Senior Secondary School in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area and since 1991 corps members deployed to the state had been having their orientation at a temporary camp at Umuanya.
The present governor, Willie Obiano commenced the construction of the complex which finally took off on November 7, 2019.
Declaring open the Anambra State NYSC permanent camp, Governor Obiano, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Empowerment and Creative Economy, Afam Mbanefo, assured of speedy completion and installation of furniture in all the blocks.
He also enjoined the corps members posted to the state to take part in all orientation programmes so as to maximally benefit from the exercises for self-help and national development.
The governor commended the NYSC management in the state for their strides, especially in its relationship with the state government, which he described as robust and cordial.
Welcoming the 2019 Batch C Stream 1 corps members at the new orientation camp, the NYSC state coordinator, Mr. Kehinde Aremu, thanked Obiano for completing the permanent orientation camp as promised.
He said the organisation now has its own camp and the entire members of the NYSC were grateful to government for the feat.
“I am so elated today to inform Governor Willie Obiano that since our arrival in the state 28 years ago, these young patriots have been disciplined, they have been understanding and even helpful in solving the teething problems associated with relocation to the new camp,” he said.
He also commended the State House of Assembly for the appropriation to enable payment of the highest state allowances to youth corps members in the country.
