The Bayelsa State government has deployed over 2000 civil servants from the state ministries to schools as teachers.
The Chairman of the Bayelsa State Teachers Training Registration Certification Board, Dr. Stella Ugolo, disclosed this yesterday during the opening ceremony of the 3rd batch of the state’s teacher training programme and award presentation in Toru-Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area of the state.
She enjoined the people of Bayelsa to support the on-going reformative programmes of the administration of Governor Seriake Dickson in the education sector.
According to her, the idea of redeploying 2000 civil servants from their respective MDAs is for them to be trained as teachers and posted to schools that lack staff, saying such government policy is commendable.
She said: “The Board’s mandate is to provide effective and well-structured Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes for teachers that are serving and those that are new entrants into the system, after which the successful trainees are registered and certified as competent to teach in the state’s primary and secondary schools.
“The programme is in two batches, during the first batch, 285 redeployed civil servants were trained, in the second batch, 372 persons were trained; all with the aim of providing sufficient manpower for our primary and secondary schools,” she said.
The guest lecturer at the training, Prof. Kolawole Adeyemi, advised other state governments to emulate Bayelsa State in creating a similar agency meant to coordinate Teachers Training, Registration and Certification, for the purpose of enhancing and ensuring the quality of education in their respective states.
In his lecture titled, ‘Towards Quality Assurance For Adequate Education Delivery in the 21st Century Schools’, Prof. Adeyemi admitted that the quality of education in the country has fallen, adding that since quality is dynamic, those involved in tutoring must continuously improve themselves through total quality management strategies and trainings.
