The Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) has urged Nigerian women scientists to produce cutting-edge scientific research that will solve social and economic problems in the country.
NASAC’s Executive Director Jackie Olang made the appeal in Abuja at the just concluded Women in Science Summit themed: Women in Science organised in Abuja by the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS).
Olang who was the keynote speaker said women scientists should become the “voice of science” in the global arena and book a place for themselves when critical issues about science are discussed.
She also called for integrated or trans-disciplinary research for purposes of ensuring that the next generation of women scientists see science as both a noble calling and an enterprising career.
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu who was represented by the Director General of Nigerian Leather Institute(NILEST), Zaria, Dr Ekeria Ngozie Oparah, said women in science should constitute an indispensible force in nation building.
Other participants at the summit called for increased awareness and sensitisation on benefits of sciences to attract more women and girls into the field.
