Miracle exam centres, poor funding breed low education standard – Don

Professor Eddy Erhagbe of the Department of History and International Studies, University of Benin has said the existence of special, or miracle learning centres which help candidates to cheat in exams, inadequate funding, outdated curriculum, among others, are largely responsible for the falling standard of education in the country.

Erhagbe, in a lecture titled, ‘Young Teachers, the Future of the Profession’, delivered during the World Teachers Day celebration organized by the Edo State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Benin, called for retraining and upgrading of teachers nationally to become competent knowledge providers.

“There seems to be consensus that the education sector has suffered greatly in recent years to the extent that the gains of previous years are being lost, especially in terms of quality education in the country,” he noted.

The don said the development has resulted in the establishment of ‘miracle’ centres in some states where teachers systematically connive with students to cheat, especially in public examinations.
