An American based gymnast and gold Medalist at the just concluded All African Games, Uche Eke, says his ultimate target is to win a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Japan.
The 22-year-old graduate of computer science from University of Michigan, won a gold medal in the pommel horse category, beating the Algerians and Egyptians to the top spot at the 2019 All African Games in Morocco.
He told journalists that he is focused on getting the ultimate prize at next year’s Olympic games.
“Winning gold medal of the pommel horse category is an indication that my dream of going to Tokyo next year to become the first African to win a medal in gymnastics at the Olympics remains on course.
“I am fully committed to that dream of getting the ultimate prize [gold medal] at the Olympic.”
Eke is seeking to shatter the glass ceiling by becoming the first African to win a medal in gymnastics at the Olympics, especially with the fact that most of his contemporary for the Tokyo Olympics gymnastics events from team USA, are all a step behind him.
Born in Maryland, USA to Nigerian parents, Eke is drawing inspirations from the likes of Courtney Dike, Alex Iwobi and the current trio of Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoga who remained committed to Nigeria despite having the option of representing other countries of their births.
