The World Bank and Bauchi State government have flagged-off the $65.5m Bauchi Urban Water Supply Expansion Project to improve water supply in Bauchi metropolis and environs.
The project was flagged-off at the main project site at Gubi Dam water treatment plant, a few kilometers from the state capital.
The state government is paying $6.5m as counterpart fund for the project which is expected to be completed by December 2021.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Umaru Shehu, said the project is part of the World Bank-assisted Bauchi Urban Water Sector Reform Project which will be funded through a credit facility.
“The project will be counter funded by the state government to the tune of $6.5million with a time line completion of June 2020. However, because of the delay in the take off of the project, a one year extension had been applied for to the relevant authorities.
“This multi billion Naira project is designed to ensure affordable, economical and sustainable access to water services to all customers within its area of coverage,” he said.
According to him, the major components of the project involves the rehabilitation of Gubi Dam at the cost of N791. 9m and expansion works of water distribution networks in Bauchi metropolis.
The Managing Director, Bauchi state Urban Water and Sewerage Corporation, Engr. Aminu Gital, said the project is designed to support Bauchi, Ekiti and Rivers to increase access to improved water supply in the state capitals as well as improve the financial viability of the water utilities. He said the project became effective on February 12, 2015 and will officially close in June 2020.
