PDP condoles victims of Lagos pipeline fire, seeks adequate compensation

The Lagos state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condoled with the families of victims of the pipeline explosion which occurred at Ijegun area of the state on Thursday morning.

The party also called on the state government to prevail on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to compensate the victims.

Daily Trust reports that there was a huge fire at the NNPC right of way in the early hours of Thursday which was caused by the activities of vandals.

Emergency responders are still battling to put out the fire. Two persons have been confirmed dead while 32 vehicles burnt.

However, the PDP Publicity Secretary in the state, Taofik Gani, in a statement said, “The state must seek compensation from NNPC on behalf of the victims and the community.”

The party also blamed the LASG for not developing the community thereby causing the incessant pipeline explosions.

It urged that all the victims must be adequately taken care of especially the dependants of the dead.

“While we condole with the victims of the fire, we charge the LASG to ensure that adequate medical supports get to the injured just as the dead must all be identified, buried with dignity and their dependants supported.

“The LASG must however take responsibility for this type of avoidable carnage. The state agencies responsible for regulations have all gone into sleeping mode, hence these avoidable disasters of pipeline explosion, flooding, building collapse, boat mishaps, road accidents etc.

“The governor must declare an immediate report on these agencies to get them function optimally. For the sake of clarity, the LASG has the duty to identify the pipeline areas in the state and cordon off the areas, provide security there,” the statement added.
