Violence mars INC election as hoodlums storm venue, cart away materials

Violence stalled the election of the Ijaw National Council (INC) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa as hoodlums stormed the election venue after some results had been declared and carted away materials.

A situation which caused panic in the town, as violence youths armed with dangerous weapons and numbering over 1000 stormed the venue, dislodged security on guard and grained entrance into the venue.

INC is the highest sociocultural organization in Ijaw nation and over 300 delegates cutting across Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and other states where Ijaw groups are found had gathered in Yenagoa to choose their leaders.

Several delegates and observers who scampered for safety when the violence erupted are still missing in the creek around Ijaw House in Asikoro axis of Yenagoa.

Problem started when some Bayelsa state government favoured candidates sensed they were loosing out in the positions declared before the crisis erupted, the youths had earlier in the day blocked the venue of accreditation before the security agencies contained them.

Chairman of the electoral committee, Rear Admiral Woyengidinikpete Yanga (Retd) said that the body cannot take any decision at the moment than to stop the process.

The Police spokesman in the state, SP Asinim Butswat could not be reached as he was not picking his calls.
