Humanitarian crisis affecting 14m people in Northeast – Forum

Over 14 million Nigerians have been affected by the humanitarian crisis in North east Nigeria, the African Philanthropy Forum (APF) has said.

Among this population, about 7.7 million of the affected are in dire need of humanitarian aid, it noted in a statement issued on Monday.

The APF said this on the backdrop of its regional meeting on Humanitarian Aid in holding in Abuja on Tuesday.

The meeting entitled “Amplifying Humanitarian Aid in Nigeria,” will address the humanitarian crisis particularly in the Northeast, examine tailored solutions and how collaboration among stakeholders are essential to successfully provide sustainable and live-changing humanitarian aid in Nigeria.

“With over 1,920,000 individuals in Internally Displaced Person camps, 6,900,000 in need of health services, and 7,700,000 in need of humanitarian assistance in north eastern Nigeria, there is an urgent need for collaboration across sectors to ensure fast, reliable and sustainable interventions to current and future humanitarian emergencies in Nigeria,” APF said.

The Executive Director, Mosun Layode said, “The APF Thematic Regional Meeting seeks to provide a platform to inform, inspire and facilitate collaborations between key players across various sectors to proactively and collectively ensure rapid humanitarian intervention as well as rehabilitation to mitigate human suffering.”

The Forum was launched in 2014 and for the convergence of partners who are united by their passion, the Membership and Communications Officer, Sarah Stephen said in the statement. It has reached 1,700 stakeholder in 12 African countries that include Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon.

The participants will be drawn from Aliko Dangote Foundation, BUA Foundation, Centre for Disease Control, MTN Foundation, Muhammadu Indimi Foundation, Red Cross Nigeria, T.Y. Danjuma Foundation, among others.
