The Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kware in Sokoto State is to establish a family health clinic to address the negative perception of people with regards to mental health issues.
Medical Director, Dr Shehu Sale, disclosed this at the inauguration of a Public Relations and Publication committee for the hospital.
Dr Sale noted that the stigma associated with mental health discourages people from seeking help.
The Master Trainer with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was however optimistic that the clinic would strengthen mental healthcare delivery.
He urged the media to assist in educating the public on mental health concerns.
The Managing Director said the committee was set up to boost relationship between the hospital, media organisations and the general public.
He pointed out that with modern ways of acquiring knowledge through ICT skills, the world had become a global village.
Dr Sale said health workers need to join the trend so as to remain relevant in their profession.
He disclosed that the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kware had been repositioned, through manpower development initiatives, in line with best international practices
The Consultant Psychiatrist noted improvements in residency training, renovation of the post basic school of psychiatric nursing, and the regaining of accreditation for the Federal School of Post Basic Psychiatric Nursing.
He lauded federal government’s ongoing renovation works at the hospital which he said would provide offices, wards, accommodation and other structures.
