Osun: Guards kill Imam’s son at Redeemer’s University

Tragedy struck in Ede, Osun State, on Sunday when Ibrahim Olaiya, a son of the Imam of Zumutatu Mosque in the town, was allegedly killed by some security guards in the premises of the Redeemer’s University.

Our correspondent gathered that Olaiya, a welder, was mobbed to death by some security guards believed to be members of the Oodua People Congress (OPC).

A resident of Ede told Eko Trust that the late Olaiya was accused of stealing some iron rods belonging to Redeemer’s University, Ede, and that when he was apprehended, the security guards beat him to coma.

The Imam’s son was said to have hired a vehicle to ferry out the iron rods from the university’s premises at about 4am on the Sunday but was unsuccessful as the OPC men descended on him and the driver of the vehicle and beat both of them black and blue.

The source said, “The matter was reported to the police and Ibrahim was rushed to a nearby hospital but he died on the way to the hospital. He was taken to the hospital with the university’s security van and died inside it. The driver did not die but he was injured and is receiving treatment at a hospital.”

The Head of the Directorate of Public Affairs, Redeemer’s University, Ede, Mr Adetunji Adeleye, said the institution did not ask the perpetrators to kill the man.

Adeleye explained that considering the manner petty thieves had been disturbing the area, the people were desperate in dealing with any suspected thief caught in the area.

A top police officer confirmed that the matter has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Osun State police command in Osogbo for thorough investigation.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Folasade Odoro, confirmed the incident, describing it as a mob action.
