Five local government areas in Sokoto have been listed as prone to major flood in the state.
They include Sabon Birni, Yabo, Wurno, Shagari and Tambuwal local government areas of the state.
Sokoto State Commissioner for Water Resources, Umar Bature, who disclosed this on Thursday in Sokoto, said it was based on the warning from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to the state authorities.
He added that milder flood was also predicted in Gada, Raba, Goronyo and Kware local government areas.
The commissioner however said the ministry in collaboration with other relevant ministries, federal and non-governmental agencies are strategising on tackling the possible natural occurrence.
He said as part of proactive measure, stakeholders meetings and preventive awareness campaigns had begun.
This, he added, was to address the likely consequences and ways to reduced its magnitude.
He reminded them on the need to abide by the guideline on waste disposal, building realignments, farming methods as part of measures against flood.
Bature called on local government officials, traditional institutions and community groups to sustain campaigns in the designated areas.
