Court jails graduate, 3 others for internet fraud

A Federal High Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, yesterday, jailed a 30-year-old graduate of microbiology from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Tella Ibrahim, and three others for impersonation, forgery, pretense, among other crimes.

Ibrahim and Olatunji Samod Oladimeji aka Theresa were separately arraigned before Justice Mohammed Abubakar, while two others: Adekanmbi Abdulazeez and Stephen Ogunmefun, were docked before Justice Ibrahim Watilat of the same court on Wednesday.

They were all charged to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibadan Zonal Office.

The OAU graduate pleaded guilty to the offence of fraudulent impersonation. He was said to have presented himself as one Macedo Susan Vivian and sent an e-mail to one Robert.

Counsel to the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Suleman, told the court that Ibrahim entered into a plea bargain and prayed the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.

Justice Abubabar thereafter convicted Ibrahim and sentenced him to four months imprisonment with effect from the day of his arrest, March 26, 2019.

The convict was ordered to forfeit N1m, a Honda car, one HP laptop, one iPhone 8 and one Samsung, all being benefits of the fraudulent act, to the Federal Government.

Similarly, Oladimeji pleaded guilty having entered plea bargain to the charge of impersonation and was sentenced to three months imprisonment. He would equally restitute $700 and 50 British pounds which were proceeds of the crime.

In the case of Abdulazeez and Ogunmefun who were charged for pornographic and indecent pictures, Justice Watilat sentenced them to five and three months’ imprisonment respectively.

While Abdulazeez would forfeit 800 Euros, $75, Hp laptop and Samsung 8 mobile phone, Ogunmefun would equally forfeit $700 and 50 British pounds, one black Dell laptop and one silver HP laptop to the Federal Government.
