It is easier to rob using motorcycle – suspects

A three-man suspected armed robbery gang arrested at Ipaja, Lagos, while allegedly attacking innocent members of the public yesterday admitted it was quite easy to rob pedestrians using a motorcycle.

The suspects  –  Adeleke Lateef, 23; Lekan Bashiru, 23; and Chinedu Uzozie, 21; –  were arrested on Saturday May 11, 2019, while allegedly operating along Victor Street, Ipaja.

The police said they recovered one locally made pistol, a BAJAJ motorcycle, a box of matches and a knife from him.

Uzozie told the police in his confessional statement that pedestrians were always an easy target of attack for robbers operating on a motorcycle.

Hoodlums easily attack pedestrian ladies, he said, because women were fond of hanging their bags on their shoulders while carrying another in their hands carelessly.

The suspect said, “All a robber needs to do is pull a bag off a woman’s shoulder when he is operating on a moving motorcycle. Before a woman realises she has been robbed, the suspect would have zoomed off.”

Uzozie, who said he graduated into robbery from being a conductor, said that only people who refused to part with their belongings and would rather struggle with robbers, were the ones injured.

The Lagos State police spokesman, Bala Elkana, who confirmed the arrest, said that the suspects were sighted about 8am attacking innocent persons.

“Their victim during the attack, Saheed Oloyo, whom the suspects injured with a machete and dispossessed of his motorcycle, was rescued and taken to a hospital. Investigation is ongoing and the suspects will be charged to court with conspiracy, armed robbery and attempted murder,” Elkana added.
