The Police in Anambra state have arrested 95 suspected cultists and three suspected robbery syndicates in one week.
According to a statement issued by Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Haruna Mohammed, at the weekend, he said the suspects were arrested at different locations across the state last week.
He said Police detectives attached to Isiuwulu Division, on Friday at about 4:30pm nabbed a three-man robbery syndicate, Friday Okpe aged 24 from Ijubam in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, residing at No. 3, Obi Christian street Nkpor; Peter Ochai, aged 21 from Imgeala in Okpoku LGA of Benue State residing at Afor Ogidi and Chukwuebuka Okafor aged 23 of Uzoegbu Street, Nkpor.
He said the suspects have been terrorising residents of the state.
According to him, the suspects had on the 19th April 2019 conspired and snatched a bag belonging to one Mercy Anekwe containing the sum of N15,000, a Tecno phone, Camon xPro valued N75,000, another Tecno 66I phone valued at N7,800 and a power bank valued N3,500 inside a Keke NAPEP along Limca road Nkpor in Idemili North LGA of Anambra state.
“Exhibit recovered from the suspects includes the complainant’s SIM card,” he said.
Mohammed said their case is still under investigation after which they would be charged to court for prosecution.
In a related development, the Command’s Special Anti-Cultism unit (SPACS) raided some criminal hideouts in various communities and arrested 18 suspected cultists.
He said the Police arrested six suspected cultists on 5th May at Ekwulobia axis and on 6th May, at Nteje/Awkuzu axis, it arrested15 suspected cultists. On 7th May, at Nkpor Uno, five suspected cultists were also arrested.
He further stated that on 8th May, 11 suspected cultists were arrested at Ifite Awka axis.
“On the 09/05/2019, at Oko /Nanka, 22 suspected cultists were arrested. On 10/05/19, at Enugwu ukwu/Nimo/Nise, 18 suspected cultists were further arrested,” he said.
According to him, from the raids carried out between 04/5/2019 to date, a total number of 95 suspected cultists were arrested, 32 were screened out, 28 suspects charged to court, 10 placed under police supervision for being under age, while 25 others are under investigation”, he added.
