ASUU blames Gov Ahmed for Varsity’s indefinite closure

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has blamed the current situation in the institution on undue interference of the state government in the administration of the university.

It would be recalled that the governing council of KWASU on Thursday shut down the university, indefinitely, to prevent violence and ensure security on campus, following protests by students and other stakeholders over the appointment of an acting vice chancellor by the state government and directive that the incumbent vice chancellor should proceed on terminal leave.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Friday, the chairman, ASUU-KWASU, Dr. Issa Abdulraheem, said that the government’s interference led to students’ rampage and eventual closure of the school.

The academic union, which described the government interference as biased and politically motivated, said that the ASUU had warned the government on implication of interfering into the affairs of the institution on April 8, 2019, more so, when it had stopped providing subvention to the university in the past four years.

It, therefore, advised stakeholders to call a meeting to resolve the crisis and return the university to normalcy, suggesting that the transition implementation committee should convene a meeting of stakeholders, including sociocultural groups, religious groups and members of the academic communities (joint unions in KWASU) to resolve the ongoing crisis.
