Blind Association urges FG to employ more members

Mr Ishiyaku Adamu, National President, Nigeria Association for the Blind, on Wednesday urged the Federal Civil Service Commission to give more slots to members of the association during recruitment into the service.

Ishiyaku made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He said that though members of his association could not join the Nigerian Armed Forces or the police, they should be given more consideration while filling vacancies in other ministries, departments and agencies.

According to him, the blind and the physically fit are subjected to the same kind of examinations from primary schools to the tertiary institutions; so, they should not be seen as unfit to take up jobs.

He said that when a good number of the blind were gainfully employed, the younger ones would be encouraged to go through formal education, thereby helping the association to curb street begging among members.

According to him, a good number of the blind are jobless, and the government would do well to give them more attention during the process of employment in the country.
“We are appealing to the Federal Civil Service Commission to ensure that we are given special consideration during employment processes.

“This will help us in our campaign against street begging, because most of our members who are still young will be encouraged to embrace formal education,” he said.
Ishiyaku advised that the Commission should employ a greater number of their members to make life more meaningful for them. (NAN)
