In pursuant to its commitment towards improving Broadband Penetration in the country, the Nigerian Communications Commission held a sensitization programme on the Protection of Telecommunications Infrastructure in Okene  Kogi State.

Mrs Amina Shehu, Director Zonal Operations, NCC who was represented by Mr. Ekisola Oladisun, Principal Manager, Zonal Operations, NCC; stated that the workshop is tailored towards creating awareness on the need to collectively protect Telecoms infrastructure in our communities.

“This workshop is also intended to present a platform for cooperation between stakeholders in the Telecommunications Industry to reach an understanding towards putting into proper perspective the  concerns most often expressed by the public about telecoms infrastructure ;” he said.

He further emphasized that Nigeria has recorded tremendous growth in her Gross Domestic Product (GDP) since the introduction of GSM fifteen years ago, adding that regrettably, vandalism of telecom infrastructure has continued to be a major challenge in the industry.

Mr Oladisun also noted other setbacks to include: multiple tax levies from States, Local Government Areas, Communities and individuals; theft of fibre cables, Right of Way (RoW) issues and others.

“It is important to note that the spate of vandalism of Telecoms Infrastructure across the country has resulted in slowing the pace of growth of services” he noted.

Mr. Musa Daibu, Senior Manager, Technical Standards and Network Integrity (TSNI), NCC ; said the Federal Government recently sponsored a bill before the National Assembly which when passed into law will ensure that  Telecoms Infrastructure in the country are classified as Critical National Asset.

He however made a clarion call to all stakeholders, Traditional Rulers, and individuals to collectively protect telecoms infrastructure in our communities.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has again enjoined telecoms consumers and other stakeholders to join hands with the Commission towards protecting telecom infrastructure for improved telecoms service delivery to them.
