World Earth Day: FG tasks to regulate local hunters activities

An environmentalist, Abdulhadi Abdullahi, on Thursday called on the federal government to regulate the activities of local hunters in order to protect animal species in the country.

He disclosed this while speaking to journalists shortly after a rally organized by medical students of  Womenhood Foundation of Nigeria to mark World Earth Day in Kaduna with the theme: “Protecting the Species.”

The expert, who is also the Coordinator of the college, lamented over how local hunters kill animals in bush in the name of bush meat.

He said killing animals led to extinction of so many species such as vultures, lion, and pigeons among others.

“Hunters contributed a lot to this problem thus government needs to regulate their activities in the bush to be able to save our animals from total extinction.

“Why must hunters kill animals living peacefully in natural habitat in the name of bush meat, this is really uncalled for,” he said.

He described the World Earth Day as a very important day that provides opportunity for people to be sensitized on the importance of protecting their environment.

Abdulhadi further appealed to citizens of this country to avoid any act that may affect the environment negatively.

Part of the activities to mark the day was a road walk by the college medical students displaying banners on the need to protect animals’ natural habitats.
