Man jailed one year for breach of trust, cheating

A staff of Fidelity bank, Zoo road Kano branch, Hayatu Saidu, has bagged one year imprisonment for defrauding the bank as well as unsuspecting customers to the tune of N930,000,

The convict was however given an option of N10,000 and refunding the stolen amount.

According to First Information Report (FIR), on 25/3/2019 at about 7:30pm, one Tajudeen Yakubu of Fidelity bank, Zoo road, Mufida Mukhtar Tajo of Dorayi quarters and Abbas Musa Usaini of Sabuwar Gandu quarters among others, reported that the accused has been cheating the bank and customers since December, 2018.

The accused was said to be collecting monies from unsuspecting customers with the intention of opening account for them and he would later divert it into his personal use.

The offences he committed were said to be contrary to sections 76 of Penal Code Law and 365 of Criminal Procedure Code (PCP). However when the content of the FIR was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and also pleaded for leniency from the court.

The Judge, Chief Magistrate Maiwada Abubakar, therefore sentenced him to 3 months imprisonment for the first offence with an option of N5,000 fine.

He also bagged another 3 months imprisonment with an option of N5,000 fine for the second offence and six months imprisonment for the looted amount with the option of returning the said amount to the owners.

He was also given a right to appeal within one month of the judgment.
