The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kano State, has expressed shock and surprise at the apathy shown by voters toward Saturday’s Governorship and State Assembly elections.
The Chairman of the association, Rev. Adeyemo Adeolu, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Saturday.
NAN reports that Adeolu was speaking against the backdrop of the insignificant turnout of voters in Sabon Gari, Fagge Local Government Area of the state.
He said lack of interest in the elections shown by voters in spite of the massive mobilisation and sensitisation by the church was shocking.
He also expressed surprise that voters did not show as much interest as they did during the Feb. 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections.
“I hope people will still come out to vote before the election is over,” he said.
Rev. Nuhu Silas, a Domestic Violence Observer representing Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) said the low turnout of voters might be because “some people feel disappointed thinking that their votes do not count and that some card readers are faulty’’.
He urged INEC officials to ensure that the electoral process was free, fair and transparent.
He advised the candidates in the elections to remember that “power comes from God Almighty“.
NAN reports that some wards in Fagge Local Government Area of the state recorded a huge turnout of voters and noticeable presence of security personnel at all the polling units visited. (NAN)
