US congratulates Buhari, urges peaceful State elections

The United States, US, has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election, urging Nigerians to ensure a peaceful and successful State elections next week.

Incumbent President Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had defeated a former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to win the presidential election. Though, Atiku has rejected the result of the election and vowed to challenge the result in court.

The Governorship and States Assembly elections have been scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold on March 9, 2019.

In a statement by US Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo, the country congratulated the people of Nigeria for a successful Presidential and National Assembly elections, commending those who participated peacefully in the election.

Pompeo however, condemned those whose acts of violence harmed Nigerians and the electoral process.

“We note the assessments of international and domestic observer missions affirming the overall credibility of the election, despite localized violence and irregularities. We also congratulate all the other candidates for their peaceful participation in the electoral process,” he said.
