Soldiers kill many Boko Haram insurgents in Madagali, recover weapons

Soldiers have repelled a coordinated Boko Haram attack in Madagali area of Adamawa state, killing many of the attackers.

Military sources in Madagali revealed that a large number of Boko Haram fighters launched a coordinated attack on Madagali town, Magar and Gulak, the headquarters of Madagali local government area on Tuesday evening.

The source indicated that after hours of intense fighting, soldiers overpowered the insurgents, killing an unspecified number and seizing two anti-aircraft guns and several AK 47 rifles.

“We have overpowered the terrorists and killed many of them. We recovered two anti-aircraft guns and burnt one. Several AK 47 have also been recovered from them”, the source stated.

Civilians contacted by our reporter said sounds of gunshots and heavy blasts rented the air when the attack was going on, forcing some of them to flee to the bush and surrounding mountains for cover.

“We were really scared but now the fighting has ended and we heard that soldiers are on the trail of some insurgents who fled into the bush”, he stated.

Boko Haram had controlled the area alongside six others in 2014 until their liberation by the Nigerian Army in 2015. Since then, the insurgents had carried out several attacks including suicide bombings in the area.

When contacted, the military commander in Madagali, Lt Col. A.S. Ahmadu could not immediately comment on the development.
