The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Musiliu Smith, on Tuesday said the commission would sanction police officer over misconduct during election duty.
Smith, who was a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), made this known at the opening ceremony of an election security summit organized by the PSC and a not-for-profit organization, Nigeria Policing Programme (NPP).
He said the summit is also to sensitize and create awareness amongst the electorate on the role of the police during the elections.
He said the police account for over 60 percent of personnel involved in providing security during elections.
He noted that section 6 of the Police Service Commission Act confers the body with the responsibility to sanction any police man who fails to discharge his duties in a manner expected of him.
He said the PSC in preparation to monitor the conduct of policemen during election duty would deploy its personnel across the 36 states of the country and the FCT.
He said the commission would publicize dedicated telephone hot lines for Nigerians to reports when they observe any misconduct by police officers.
He said the PSC would ensure that such reported misconduct is investigated and sanctions meted out to any erring officers.
