Kaduna: No corps members will serve as ad-hoc staff in volatile LGAs – NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Monday said no corps member will be allowed to be posted to volatile local government areas of Kaduna state as ad-hoc staff in the general elections.

The state coordinator, Hajiya Walida Siddique, who disclosed this to journalists in Kaduna, said corps members have not been deployed to Kajuru and Birnin Gwari local government areas of the state due to insecurity in the areas.

She added that the NYSC is working with Department of State Security (DSS) to identify other areas considered volatile in the state.

“Most of our corps members are not from Kaduna and so, they don’t know the terrain much. What I’m saying in essence is that, they don’t know the terrain and when there is any unrest, they may decide to run and run into another problem,” she said.

The coordinator added that there is no compulsion to serve as electoral officers because it is voluntary.

“Those that are there in Birni Gwari are not even interested in participating in the election,” she said.

‎It will be recalled that about 800 persons lost their lives while properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed in 2011 following elections violence in the state.
