Survey indicates low enrollment, dropout in nomadic schools

A survey has indicated low level of girl-child enrollment in nomadic schools in the country compared to their male counterpart as the ration at present stands at one girl-child to three male children.

The Director of Quality Assurance, National Commission for Nomadic Education (NCNE), Akin Akinyosoye made this known while addressing newsmen in Dutse, Jigawa state capital.

The director said the survey also revealed that the few that had been attending the nomadic schools among the girl-child also dropped out in class 4 for marriage.

He said it was as a result of the survey findings the commission visited the state for sensitization and mobilization campaign with a view to improving nomadic girl child education adding that the visit provided opportunity for discussions with critical stakeholders in the Ministry of Education, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the state Agency for Nomadic Education.

Akinyosoye explained that a meeting was also held with stakeholders for strengthening of policy framework and inclusion of nomadic schools in all the state intervention projects that includes, school feeding program, deployment of female teachers, provision of required school infrastructure and instructional materials.

“Discussion was held on increasing access and equality for nomadic children especially, girl-child enrollment, progression, transition and mobilization of the nomads for adult literacy especially the women. Daunting challenges of nomadic girl child education in nomadic schools visited include out of school girl child, high level of drop out, early marriages and absent of transition to secondary schools.

“Baseline data on participation of nomadic girl child were obtained from some of the local government areas visited. The team also sensitized and mobilized the education secretaries and officials of the Local Education Authorities (LEAs),” he said.
