Senate wants former President, Shehu Shagari immortalised

The Senate, on Thursday, urged the Federal Government to immortalise late former president Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari by naming a national monument after him.

Senators also resolved to send a high-powered delegation to condole with the family of the late former president.

While observing a one minute of silence in honour of the late former president, senators paid glowing tributes to Shagari, whom they described as a core patriot and democrat.

The resolutions were reached after the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senators Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba, Aliyu Wamakko and seven others.

Senators said, as a former president, Shagari “had a distinguished unblemished public service record spanning over a period of 30 years,” noting that “he was forthright, a nation builder, a dis‎tinguished statesman that contributed greatly to the growth and development of democracy in Nigeria.”

They said his demise was a great loss, not only to his immediate family and the people of Sokoto State, but also to the entire country.
