Cleric in court for alleged N600,000 fraud

A Muslim cleric, Dauda Ajagbe, 25, on Thursday appeared in an Ilorin Magistrates’ for alleged N600,000 fraud.

The accused, who hails from Ede town in Osun, is standing trial for fraud and obtaining money under false pretext.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Adewumi Johnson, told the court that one Adeola Balogun of Eleboro Elliozu Street, Port-Harcourt in Rivers, had on Nov. 8, petitioned Inspector-General of Police on the issue.

He said the complainant did that through the X-squad office, Adeta area, Ilorin.

Johnson said Balogun reported that the accused who disguised as an Alfa called him sometime in February 2018 from Ilorin.

He said that during their phone conversation, the accused called the complainant by his first name and revealed all his current life problems to him and promised to proffer lasting solution to them.

The prosecutor further told the court that the accused,in the process, fraudulently collected N600, 000 from the complainant via his Wema Bank account.

He said that police investigation showed that the accused actually defrauded the complainant to the tune of N600, 000 as reflected in a print out statement of his bank account.

The prosecutor further said that the accused admitted to have committed the offence during police investigation.

Johnson said the offence contravened Section 3 (1) of the advance fee fraud and other related offences.

Though the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges, the Magistrate, Mrs A.A Abioye, ordered him to be remanded at the Federal Prisons, Ilorin and adjourned the case until Feb.6, for mention.(NAN)
