The traditional ruler of Igbos in the FCT, Eze Igbo Abuja, Eze Ibe Nwosu, has called for better cultural understanding and cooperation among the different ethnic groups to enhance peace and unity in the country.
Speaking during this year’s Iri-ji (new yam) cultural festival in Abuja at the weekend, Sir Ibe said the event was an annual event where Igbos from the six area councils of the FCT gather to celebrate.
“One of the reasons for this annual festival of Iri-ji is for other cultures and traditions in the country to understand the culture of an Igbo man. This is because we believe that through the showcasing of our culture and tradition, our ways of life will be better understood by other cultures in the country. This will therefore bring about unity in the country.”
“It is also important that Igbo people wherever they are should be patient with the government; they should not feel victimized, rather live in harmony with other people and love one another. If they make trouble, then they should know that they cannot live in peace,” he said.
The traditional ruler also urged the government to alleviate the plight of the Igbo people in the FCT, adding that the ethnic group had contributed immensely to the development of the territory.
Different dance and cultural groups in the FCT were represented, showcasing their flamboyance and acrobatic dexterity.
