The federal government has called on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its ongoing national strike action for national interest’s sake.
President Muhammadu Buhari gave the charge on Tuesday during the 3rd Convocation Ceremony of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Udufu-Alike, Ikwo in Ebonyi state.
President Buhari, represented by Barr.Victor Onuoha who serves as deputy executive secretary of Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), added that the federal government is committed to the funding of Nigeria Universities.
He maintained that providing adequate infrastructures, incentives, manpower by the present government was to improve learning and teaching in higher institutions.
He stressed that the federal government which would continue to invest so much on Nigerian youth in the task of national building.
“Consequently, l urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its ongoing national industrial action for the overall nation’s interest.
“Also, l assured Nigerians that the federal government would continue within her limited resources to develop and fund our universities”, he explained.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba said the institution had 355 graduands which record an increase of 108 in 2017.
Prof. Nwajiuba further noted that 15 emerged with first class honours, 188 with second class while 145 got lower class and 7 with third class.
