How Sunshine Stars won its second Gold Cup trophy in six years – Otunba Akinyemi

The President of Sunshine Stars of Akure, Otunba Tajudeen Akinyemi, has expressed his excitement at the recent victory of his team in the Gold Cup pre-Season Tourney.

Speaking with Daily Trust in Abuja, Otunba Akinyemi said it had been a long while the club experienced the euphoria surrounding victories, describing the victory as a long sought and deserved win.

“This victory was so sweet, it has been indeed a long sought victory; it has been a while since we had any victory.

“With the re-organization of the club, a lot of changes have been made and this evidently led to the winning ground,” he said.

Affirming the club’s zeal to continue to do well and represent the country continentally, Otunba said, “winning this gold is not the least, we will continue to do all in our capacity to ensure that we make this country proud.”

“This would also be feasible with strident efforts made by the government in sports, with the help of sponsors who have pledged to make notable contributions to this club. I am positive that we will maintain the winning stride,” he added.

It will be recalled that the Akure-based club emerged champions of the 6th edition of Gold Cup pre-season tourney after recording a 1-0 victory over Kwara United recently.

The Kabiru Dogo side went home with a cheque of N300,000 and a trophy while the Bala Abubakar’s boys got a sum of N200,000 for finishing as runners up.

While speaking on the state of affairs of Nigeria’s local football league, Akinyemi said there is unity between the club owners and the League Management Company.

“There is no level of deficiency; there is unity between us to take Nigerian football to the next level. Yes, there were a few mistakes here and there, but that has been corrected,” he noted.
