Kano state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, would soon sign into law the bill seeking the establishment of a commission to cater for people with special needs in the state.

The state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Ibrahim Mukhtar, disclosed this in Kano when he received delegations from various associations of people with special needs on a courtesy call in his office at the state secretariat.

Daily Trust learnt that the bill had passed through various legislative processes and is currently awaiting the assent of the state governor.

Addressing the delegation, the Attorney General assured that the bill would be assented to either in the next or upper state executive council meeting.

He said the bill was delayed because the governor wants to give it a facelift to ensure that it captures appropriately issues affecting persons with special needs in the state.

The commissioner reiterated the commitment of the Ganduje-led administration to giving succour to the people with special needs to enable them realize their potentials, encouraging them to think positive about themselves in their drive to realizing their God-given potentials.

He said the state government did not ban begging because it wants persons with special needs to suffer but to encourage them to be innovative and productive not only to themselves but the larger society.

Speaking on behalf of the delegates, Professor Jibrin Isah Iso, appealed to the governor to ensure speedy signing of the bill so as to address social and economic challenges confronting the persons with special needs.

“We have submitted to federal and state level seeking the government to establish a commission for us people with disabilities because there are a lot of people with disabilities who are roaming about in the streets begging which if to say they are given opportunities they can become better.

“I am a role model; had it been that my parents did not support me for my education, I wouldn’t have become what I am today. So, what we want the board or commission or agency to do for us is to take care of the persons with disability so that they should not be roaming about in the streets begging for alms. This is the main reason why we want our board so that we can help our fellows in many ways,” Prof. Iso said.
