United pulled one back when Anthony Martial converted a 58th-minute penalty after Ederson had brought down substitute Romelu Lukaku.

But thoughts of another United fightback at Etihad Stadium ended when Ilkay Gundogan scored in the 86th minute, tucking home Bernardo Silva’s cross after a 44-pass move.

City lead on 32 points, two clear of Liverpool, while United stay eighth on 20 points.
