The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Niger state has demanded an increment of retirement age for teachers in the state government’s employment from 60 to 65.
The demand formed part of the resolution at the end of its Executive Council meeting on Monday in Minna.
Briefing newsmen at the end of the meeting, the state chairman of the Council, Comrade Ibrahim Umar, urged Governor Abubakar Sani Bello to as a matter of urgency initiate an executive bill to the State House of Assembly for express approval to increase the retirement age of teachers from 60 to 65 years and 35 to 40 years of service respectively.
The meeting also urged the state government to as a matter of urgency, recruit more teachers to fill the vacuum created as a result of retirement, death and transfer of service, adding that workload occasioned by the development is having negative effect on the sector.
It also called for release and implementation of members’ promotion at both primary and secondary schools level; make adequate provision of instructional materials to schools so as to make teaching and learning more effective and efficient, and implement the approval in principle on the payment of domestic servant allowance to teachers on salary grade levels 15 and above.
The meeting commended Governor Bello for keeping faith in the area of regular payment of teachers’ salaries and also putting genuine efforts towards providing an ideal environment for conducive teaching and learning to take place in schools.
