ABU students win Nigeria computer programming contest

The students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria have emerged the gold medalists of the 7thNigeria Universities Computer Programming Contest (NUCPC) in Abuja.

The annual competition which is organized by National Mathematical Centre (NMC) has in attendance 16 teams from public and private universities in Nigeria.

Federal University of Technology Akure emerged 2nd while Ebonyi State University clinched the bronze in 3rd position.

Speaking at the event at the weekend, the coordinator of Computer Science Programme at NMC, Dr Jennifer Bamidele said the competition is to sharpen the students programming skills and improve their knowledge in science and technology.

While noting that this year’s edition was more interesting due to introduction of some presentations before and in between contest, she urged the winners to go back and work hard to retain the trophy next year.

The CEO of NMC, Prof Stephen Onah represented by Prof Fumilayo Saporu said the programme was to catch them young and expose them to areas that are similar in competitive manner.

He said they should apply the knowledge gathered when they go back to their various universities.

Speaking on behalf of ABU team, Nuhu Ibrahim a 400level student of computer science expressed joy as the national champions, adding that they were able to recognize their self-strength and for everyone they assigned task where they are better and it really work out.

However, Covenant University emerged 4th, University of Ibadan 5th, Federal University Lokoja 6th, Ambrose Alli University 7th and Federal university of technology, Owerri took 8th position.
